A Nivkh legend about Tol (or Tolk), the powerful sea spirit who governs the waters around Sakhalin Island and the Sea of Okhotsk. Tolk is a massive creature that controls the movement of fish, the intensity of storms, and the success of sea mammal hunts. Before embarking on sea voyages, Nivkh hunters and fishermen would make offerings to Tolk — throwing tobacco, food, and sacred objects into the sea to ensure his favor.
