The Son of the Sun's Courting in the Land of the Giants
The epic origin myth of the Sámi people. Beaivvi bárdni (the Son of the Sun) sails beyond the easternmost star to the land of the giants to seek a bride. He wins the giant's daughter through strength and cunning. The giant's daughter ties three knots in the wind to help them escape her pursuing brothers—untying each knot releases stronger gales. The brothers are turned to stone by the rising sun. The Son of the Sun marries the giant's daughter on a bearskin and reindeer hide, and she gives birth to the Gállábártnit (the hunting sons), the legendary ancestors of the Sámi people.
