A Chaga legend tells of a poor hunter named Mushi who lost his way in the dense forest on Kilimanjaro's slopes. After days of wandering, starving and exhausted, Mushi came upon a clearing where an old woman sat beside a fire. The old woman was the spirit of the mountain, though Mushi did not know it. She gave him food and shelter, asking only that he not look back when he left at dawn.
