The Stállu's Christmas Meal
A Sámi Christmas legend from Kautokeino. While parents were away at church, a Stállu came to the camp and began killing and eating children one by one. A quick-witted maid saved the youngest child, tricked Stállu with her traveling cape, and escaped on skis behind the fastest reindeer. The reindeer burst into pieces in the Kautokeino River from exhaustion. All reindeer in the camp were turned to stone. The stones remain in the Kautokeino River as a reminder of Stállu's anger.
