The Tale of Kagsagsuk

legend · Greenland · North American

Kagsagsuk is a mistreated orphan boy who suffers extreme cruelty from his foster mother and the village men. Seeking strength, he journeys to the mountains to encounter the Amarok, a giant solitary wolf spirit. Through a series of grueling trials where the Amarok repeatedly throws him down, Kagsagsuk sheds his weaknesses and gains superhuman strength. He eventually returns to the village, defeats three bears, and takes revenge on those who tormented him, though he remains a lonely figure of legend.
