The Thunderers are powerful storm spirits who live in the sky and cause thunder and lightning. They are described as giant warriors who hunt and kill the great horned serpents and other monsters that threaten humanity. In the Seneca tradition, they are led by the great chief Hino. Their gaze can bring death to mortal men, yet they are generally benevolent and play a protective role in Iroquois legends. They are the eternal enemies of the Great Horned Serpent Oniare and maintain the balance of the world by ensuring no monster grows too powerful. The Thunderers are honored with tobacco offerings
