The Tomtarna

fairy-tale · Sweden · Scandinavian

The boy Andreas has left his childhood farm to seek fortune in the city. His aging parents miss him terribly. The farm tomte takes pity on them and sets out to find the boy. Andreas works as a guard in the troll prison until a troll bites off his fingers. In despair, he runs into the forest. The tomte finds him, produces the mother's apron, and tucks it into the boy's hand. Andreas dreams his mother is leading him home. When he wakes, the tomte has enchanted his hand with 'troll fingers' that work better than ever.
