The tomte (or gårdstomte) is a household spirit who lives on farms and in barns, watching over the family and livestock. On Åland, as in the rest of the Swedish-speaking world, the tomte was both protector and disciplinarian: he rewarded hard work and good management with prosperity, but punished laziness, drunkenness, and night work with mischief or outright harm.
