Peder Lars, a farmer's son, is riding to town to buy a new jacket before courting the beautiful and wealthy Lisa that evening. He is confident she will accept his proposal. But on the way through the forest, he encounters a hideous troll-woman lying injured in a ditch. She begs him to collect resin from seven pine trees to heal her wounded leg, offering gold coins in return. Peder Lars is repulsed by her appearance and initially refuses, but the haunting cries of the troll-woman's mother calling for her drive him to collect the resin.
