The Ulda's Old Mother
A Sámi story about the matriarch of the Ulda. The underground people are rich, beautiful, and well-dressed, with reindeer of exceptional colors. All gold and silver under the earth belongs to them. They care for the bear in his winter den, feeding him invisibly. They sometimes swap their children for human babies. If you throw a metal object over a herd of Ulda reindeer that leave no tracks in snow, the herd becomes yours.
