Wihio the Spider Trickster
Wihio is the Cheyenne trickster figure, a spider-like being similar to Iktomi of the Lakota. He is clever but greedy, often getting into trouble because of his selfishness. In one story, Wihio tried to kill some ducks for a feast by tricking them into a dance with their eyes closed. A loon peeked and exposed the trick, and Wihio was shamed. In another tale, Wihio's greed caused him to be trapped inside a hollow log by his own scheme. Wihio stories serve as cautionary tales, teaching Cheyenne children about the consequences of selfish behavior and the importance of community values.
