Yewe (also known as So or Hevioso) is the Ewe god of thunder, lightning, and rain. Yewe is a trɔwo (lesser deity) descended from Mawu, and is considered one of the most powerful and feared spirits in the Ewe pantheon. Those who offend Yewe may be struck by lightning, and special priests (Yewe priests) are needed to intercede. The Yewe cult has elaborate initiation ceremonies in which new initiates spend months in seclusion learning sacred songs, dances, and rituals.
