Zuleikha and the Forty Maidens
The legend of the Forty Maidens (Kirk Kiz) is a Central Asian heroic tale found among Turkmen, Kazakh, and Karakalpak peoples. A beautiful and brave maiden named Zuleikha leads a band of forty warrior women who defend their people against invading forces. Rather than submit to forced marriage to an enemy khan, Zuleikha trains herself and her forty companions in martial arts, horseback riding, and archery.
